Cutting Out The Unwanted from a photograph

  It does happen. You have a great photo but there is someone or something in it that you would like gone. That ex husband or wife, or once good friend, can be deleted with just a little work. Here we show the PSP technique for photograph manipulation, deleting an unwanted part of a photo.

Let's get rid of someone! We will use this photo of 3 friends. Let's suppose that the one in the middle had a fight with the other 2 young ladies, so she just has to go. (If this is for real, don't be too hasty in throwing away the original photograph. You could be friends again next week.)

What you will actually do is cover the unwanted with one of the other girls. Therefore, you will need to select the left or right hand friend and move her into the middle position, on top of the unwanted.

Open up your photograph and study the surrounds of how you can best get rid of the unwanted. Look at their posture and the background and visualize exactly where and what you will have to alter.

This is a 2 part tutorial. As we use extensive screenshots to explain the technique, the tutorial was split to facilitate faster page loading. Follow the link after Step 5 for part 2.

Let's begin.

STEP 1

Zoom in on the photo to make work easier by selecting the Magnifying Tool and left clicking on the image.

STEP 2

Click on the Freehand Lasso Tool and apply the settings;
Selection Type = Point to Point
Feather = 0
Antialias = Checked

STEP 3

You will need to move the left friend into the middle.

Draw a selection around the left friend. Notice how the girl in the middle is taller so taking a little of the background at the top with you will apply filling and cover.

This can be trimmed to suit later, so you don't need to be exact at this point.

STEP 4

Go to Selections || Promote to Layer

Click on the Mover Tool and shift the selection into the middle. Make sure you line up certain sections such as the arm around the back of the girl on the right.

Deselect the image. CTRL + D

STEP 5

Click on the Freehand Lasso Tool again and make a selection around the background portion that is covering part of the "right" girls head.

When selected hit the Delete Key to clear the selection and deselect the image. CTRL + D

Click on Layers || Merge || Merge All Flatten
