How to Restore Old Photographs

We all have them. Old family photos that you would like to spruce up and save. It is easier than you think to restore old photos with the tools that come with Paint Shop Pro.

With todays technology, we can erase those scratches, white spots, coffee stains and watermarks, and make them look like the day they were taken.

Why not burn them to a CD and keep them safe for the future.

Here is what you can do to a photo that's roughly 30 years old. Bet they would all still like to look like that!

After photo restoration

After scratches and blemishes removed. Much better!

Step 1

Open your image in Paint Shop Pro.
Select the Magnifying Tool and zoom in by left clicking on the image at a trouble spot. You will use this Magnifying Tool a lot while touching up your images. Zoom in and out often to check the progress of your work.

Step 2 fig 1

Click the Selection Tool , click the Toggle Tool Options and use the following settings.

Step 3 fig 2

Click your mouse near a trouble spot on your image and drag to form a small circle. The closer you can be to the trouble spot the better the color and texture match will be.

Step 4

It is now simply a matter of Copying and Pasting a New Selection over the trouble spot. You do this by copying the selection to your clipboard, deselect the circle, paste the saved circle as a new selection and drag and place that patch over the trouble spot.

Work with the keyboards short cuts to make your work easier and less time consuming.

CTRL + C = Copy the selected circle to your clipboard.

CTRL + D = Deselect the circle.

CTRL + E = Paste the circle as a new selection.

You can also use the Retouch Tool to push some color into the trouble spot.

That's it ! Happy retouching.
