Game design plan

Shown below is an example of how to make a design plan if you wanted to create a time management game similar to 'Sheep Tycoon'.

Please Note: This game design plan is merely a reverse-engineer of my experiences as a player.

Title:

Sheep Tycoon

Actual Developers:

Tiny Mantis

One sentence description:

Time management game where you need to help a farmer called Ollie, make money by farming his sheep and selling the dairy products.

Scenario / World:

The game scenario is set on a sheep farm.

Mode:

Single Player

Objectives:

Help a farmer called Ollie, make money by farming his sheep and selling the dairy products. You are given 2 and 1/2 minutes per level / game.

Characters:

The main character in the game is the farmer called Ollie.

Audio / visual aesthetics:

Graphics are simple in color and design, yet very effective for a free online Flash game. For instance the characters are simply bold in color, with hints of shadow to give an overall impression of detail. The outlining of each graphic contains a thick line to separate them from one another.

There is no background music. However you do hear other noises throughout the game, such as sheep baaa sounds.

Genre(s):

time management, tycoon

Possible Target Audience:

Everyone

Itemization of game elements:

Game is played with simple mouse clicks.

The introduction gives the player 5 choices:

  1. Hi Scores - to view the current best scores
  2. Instruction - how to play the game
  3. Play - start the game
  4. More games - links to the developers web site so players can view other games they have created (good idea for developers)
  5. Credits - lists names of people who worked on the game, for example, creative directors, art, programming and producer.

Top GUI displays the overall score + bonus points. It also shows how much time is left to play the current game.

Itemization of game rules:

Herd the sheep to healthy patches of grass.

If a sheep is left on a barren patch it will begin to cry and eventually die.
If a sheep cries, move the farmer named Ollie towards the animal. The sheep will then walk accordingly towards greener grass.

The more grass the sheep eat, the more milk they create. Look for the milk icon that appears over their heads. When the sheep is ready for milking, click on its head and choose the item you want to make from it. For example, cheese, butter etc.

The farmer can hold 2 milk containers at any one time.

2 containers of milk can make butter.

4 containers of milk can make cheese.

Cheese is worth more than butter, and butter worth more than milk.
