Game design plan

Shown below is an example of how to make a design plan if you wanted to create a tower defense game similar to 'Lord Of War'.

Please Note: This game design plan is merely a reverse-engineer of my experiences as a player.

Title:

Lord Of War

Actual Developers:

GameStudio.ro

One sentence description:

Tower defense / defence (also known as td) war game.

Scenario / World:

The game scenario is set amongst a countryside battlefield.

Mode:

Single Player

Objectives:

Place towers in strategic positions to stop the 10 different creeps from completing they're path. Manage and upgrade the towers to get to higher levels. There are 6 different towers to upgrade between.

Characters:

The main characters in the game are the towers and creeps.

Audio / visual aesthetics:

Graphics are what I refer to as sim style. They are very detailed with plenty of patterns, texture and shadows to be seen.

The background music is deep, reminds me of Lord of the rings. Loops through the same chords the whole game, which can be annoying to some players. Lucky there is an option to turn it off from the top GUI.

Genre(s):

td, tower defense, tower defence, war, fighting

Possible Target Audience:

Everyone loves tower defense (td) games.

Itemization of game elements:

Game is played with simple mouse clicks.

The introductory page gives the player four choices:

  1. Play - Starts the game.

  2. Play More Games - Takes the player to the developers website so they can see what other games they have created (highly recommended practice).

  3. Wall Of Fame - Displays a list of high scores obtained by game players.

  4. Instructions - Complete list of instructions, describing how to play the game. One of the best set of instructions I've seen in any free online game (highly recommended for developers to implement).

Once the tower defense game starts, the right side GUI (graphic user interface) displays a list of towers the player can choose from. Rolling your mouse pointer over each of them brings up further information such as the name, cost, damage score, speed and the range area of reach etc.

The top GUI displays a link back to the main menu, how much gold, lives and points that have been scored, as well as an option to turn the sound on or off at will.

The bottom GUI displays the level currently being played.

Itemization of game rules:

Place towers in strategic positions to stop the 10 different creeps from completing they're path.

Manage and upgrade the towers to get to higher levels. There are 6 different towers to upgrade between throughout the game.
