Hot Dish is a simulation game where you're the chef who cooks up a storm for your customers, including appetizers, entrees and desserts. The most important diners to please are the critics, who give each dish a rating. The higher the ratings, the faster you build your career. The overall aim is to work yourself up to becoming the chef of a world class 5 star restaurant.

The free online version of Hot Dish gives you a taste of how the game basically works. The download trial (which I recommend) gives you many more levels to play with, so you can ensure you like it before purchasing the full version.

Game design plan from a developers point of view

Shown below is an example of how a Flash developer would make a game design plan for a sim game similar to Hot Dish.

Note: This is not the design plan from the developers of Hot Dish. It's merely a reverse-engineer of a game design plan based on my experiences as a player.

Objectives:
Starting as a chef in a small Italian restaurant, you have to cook your way to the top, towards 5 star French cuisine.

Characters:

Cartoon drawn characters include the chefs and food critics. The characters are not moving animations, simply 2D drawings.



Audio / visual aesthetics:


Visually, the graphics are well done. Very rich in color and well drawn, as close to the real thing as possible for cartoon. Similar to Sim style graphics.

The Background music consists of a very catchy piano swing melody. Other sounds include chopping, stirring, bubbling etc.



Genre:
puzzle / simulation

Possible Target Audience:
The target audience is suitable for adults who have ever dreamed of becoming the head chef of a 5 star restaurant.

Game is played with mouse.

The introduction page displays one option, that is to play the game.

Once you're in the game there are no navigational menu's.

Game instructions / help shown automatically when game loads.

Once you're in the game there is no navigational menu's. You simply follow the onscreen instructions to create a tasty hot dish. This limitation makes the free online version a little boring. As mentioned earlier, the downloadable version offers more choices.
