Desert Rally has to be one of the most enjoyable and addictive online games I've had the pleasure of playing. Which is why we are now offering it on our own website here at Hypergurl. The objective of the rally game is to stay on the road and see how long you can last before you crash and burn. Collecting power ups along the way will help you survive a little longer, while knocking out other cars will score players bonus points. One of the unique features found in this games design is its ability to change playing angle. For instance, one minute you'll be driving vertically or upward in appearance, then suddenly you'll be steering the car horizontally. It certainly keeps the interest going for hours on end and highly entertaining.

Game design plan

Shown below is an example of how to make a design plan if you wanted to create a car racing game similar to 'Desert Rally'. It lists a few of the important elements that should go in to designing such a game.

The game is set on a roadway deep in desert sand and hills.

 Single Player

Objectives:

Stay on the road and see how long you can last. Try not to crash.

Characters:

The main character is the car the player chooses at the beginning and its corresponding driver, all of whom are animal in design. The player can choose between several cars, each with their own unique characteristics. For example, a pig driving a blue car, a monkey driving a yellow car or a giraffe driving a light blue car etc.



Audio / visual aesthetics:


Graphics are highly detailed in a cartoon style. I say highly detailed because the game artist has used a lot of shadow and texture when drawing the images. He / she hasn't skimp on details. I guess you could say it has the same amount of detail as you'd expect to see in a television cartoon. The quality of the graphics can be changed from 'low' to 'best' once the game has started as well.

There is fast rhythmic background music to help get the players pulse going. The music suits the racing theme really well and is orchestra / piano style.

Other sound elements can be heard through out the game. For example, when a power up is collected, or when the player knocks out another car.

All sound and background music can be turned on or off at will.

Game is played with mouse movements.

Game starts with a little video of a giraffe driving a car through a lonely desert road. Then the player is given 5 options:

  1. Start Game - starts game
  2. Instructions - gives list of game instructions telling you how to play
  3. More Online Games - takes player to the developers website
  4. Download Games - again takes player to developers website
  5. Add this game to your site - same as above (highly recommended practice for developers)
  6. View High scores - view a list of player submitted high scores

After starting the game, you are required to choose between 6 characters / cars.

Press Go button to start game.

Right hand side GUI (graphic user interface) displays a life line.

Bottom GUI displays the total score, what level is currently being played, a link back to the main menu, options to turn off sound and or background music, as well as graphic quality. Take notice of the GUI elements, they are some of the best practices I've seen in free online Flash games.

Power ups are easily recognized by the sparkle highlights surrounding them.

The road often has what looks like a round-a-bout, that has a unique way of turning the driving angle. For example, you will be driving upward (vertically) along the roadway, then suddenly seem to be driving horizontally instead, once you hit one of these round-a-bouts.
