Carcan racing game for younger boys between 6 and 10 years of age. Easy, fun, can be played online. No download required.

Carcan Racing Game for kids

Younger boys between the ages of 6 and 10 are going to love this car racing game. The cars are created to look as though they are made from aluminum cans. The car cans are easy to navigate around the racing track and the game doesn't require a lot of skill. Players are racing the clock in that they need to reach each checkpoint within a 30 second time frame. Keep on the roadway and players will have no trouble making the time limit.

Hints and tips on how to play 'Carcan' racing game

Use keyboard arrow keys to drive the car around the track. 'Up' arrow makes the car go, while the 'Left' and 'Right' arrow keys will navigate the car left and right. Pressing the down arrow will brake the car, slowing down its speed.

Game design plan

Shown below is an example of how to make a design plan if you wanted to create a car racing game similar to 'Carcan'.

Note: This is not the design plan the developer of 'Carcan' used when creating this online game. It's merely a reverse-engineer of a game design plan based on my experiences as a player.

Title:

Carcan

Actual Developers:

AllFunnyGames.net

One sentence description:

Race a car made from cans around a track.

Scenario / World:

The game scenario is set on a single car racing track, consisting of numerous checkpoints.

Mode:

Single Player

Objectives:

Race around the track in as fast a time as possible. There are six other carcans in the race, however they are created more to slow you down if you run into them. Nowhere in the game are you told if your coming first, second, third etc. Therefore it's not really a game against other cars. More against yourself and the clock.

Characters:

The main character in the game is the carcan that the game player controls. It's simple in design, made to look as though it is created from empty aluminum cans.

Audio / visual aesthetics:

Graphics are effective, simple, not created to look realistic. For example the grass / dirt area each side of the track is blue in color, not what you would expect at all.

Overall, the images are fun, hand drawn in nature. The mountains contain little detail, just as you would expect for a distant object. Most detail can be seen in the roadside advertisements as you drive around the track. For example, roadside ads for pizza etc. Although you drive past them so quickly they are left in the distance with little thought from a players perspective. Possibly from a developers viewpoint, the time taken to complete this detail could have been better spent elsewhere.

There is background music within the introductory scenes with an option to turn sound off. Although the 2nd piece of music you hear once the game starts cannot be turned back on, if you chose to turn sound off in the introduction. Personally I'd have given the player the choice to turn sound off and on within all scenes of the game.

Genre(s):

car racing, motor racing, driving, sports

Possible Target Audience:

Aimed at boys due to the content being car racing. I would also go as far as to say younger boys around 6 - 10 years old as the game does not require a lot of skills. The car cans are easy to navigate around the track. Furthermore, there is only one track to play, therefore older boys may tire of this after a few games.

Itemization of game elements:

Game is played with the pressing of keyboard arrow keys.

The introductory page allows the player three choices:

  1. Help - of which there is currently none to be seen. It seems as though the developer is still working on this area, publishing the game before the smaller details are finalized.

  2. More Games - which takes you to the developers website. A practise highly recommended for game developers. After all, everyone needs website traffic and what better way to advertise yourself than by adding your URL to each game you create.

  3. Start - As you'd expect, starts the online game. The game starts instantly, setting a time limit of 30 seconds for each checkpoint.

The bottom GUI of the introductory screen, displays an icon for turning all sound heard through out the game on or off. This option disappears once game starts.

Once the game has started, the top GUI consists of a timer that restarts at 30 seconds for each checkpoint. The bottom GUI (graphical user interface) displays the speed in miles per hour (mph), as well as how many points the player has scored.

Itemization of game rules:

Race 6 other carcans around the track as fast as possible to score highly.

Keep to the road. Driving off track slows the car down, loosing the player valuable time, of which they only have 30 seconds for each checkpoint.
