Breakout Online Game

Breakout is an arcade game firstly developed by Atari Inc. and published on May 13, 1976. This online version is a Flash remake of the original classic that gained fast popularity with the advent of video game consoles.

The objective of the game is to destroy as many bricks as you can until your 3 lives are lost.

Hints and tips on how to play 'Breakout' game

Left mouse to fire. Mouse movements to navigate the paddle. I've noticed with this game, you have to concentrate on not shifting the mouse pointer outside the main game screen.

Game design plan

Shown below is an example of how to make a design plan if you wanted to create a game similar to 'Breakout'.

Please Note: This game design plan is merely a reverse-engineer of my experiences as a player.

Title: Breakout

One sentence description: An old classic arcade game of Breakout.

Scenario / World: The game scenario is set within a technical space style theme.

Mode: Single Player

Objectives: Destroy as many bricks as you can until your 3 lives are spent.

Characters: There is no main game character. Just bricks, a paddle and ball.

Audio / visual aesthetics:

• Graphics are simple, arcade vector in style.
• Bricks are deep red in color.
• The background is a rotating animation of space.
• Audio is also classic arcade in style in that there are lots of blops and blips etc.

Genre(s): arcade

Possible Target Audience: Everyone

Itemization of game elements:

• The game begins as soon as the first screen loads.
• Along the top of the screen displays 6 columns of red bricks.
• The bottom GUI (graphical user interface) displays total points, lives left and level currently being played.
• 1/4 from the bottom is the paddle and ball that you need to bounce around the playing screen.

Itemization of game rules:

• Hit the ball across the screen with a paddle, aiming towards the line of bricks at the top.
• Destroy as many bricks as you can.
• Bounce the ball at different angles off the top and side walls of the screen.
• When a brick is hit, it's destroyed and the overall score tally increases.
• Don't let the ball hit the bottom of the screen, or you lose a turn.
• Keep going until your 3 lives are spent.
