The Apprentice game: ice-cream parlor

The Apprentice game: ice-cream parlor, is a time management game that has the player running an ice-cream store from the ground up. Each day is 4 minutes in real time. During this time, you need to make a $50 profit to stay out of Donald's boardroom and avoid being FIRED!

Making up orders and serving customers as quickly as possible, will return good profits. The more involved the customers order, the higher the profit. For example, a banana split is worth more than a single cone. So don't steer clear of orders that take more time to dish up. Also remember to collect the money from the customer by clicking on the cash left on the counter. After all, this is what the game is all about, ie returning a daily profit.

Game design plan

Shown below is an example of how to make a design plan if you wanted to create a time management game similar to 'The Apprentice'.

Please Note: This game design plan is merely a reverse-engineer of my experiences as a player.

Title:

The Apprentice game: ice-cream parlor

Actual Developers:

Legacy Interactive

One sentence description:

Time management game where you climb the corporate ladder and prove to Donald that you have what it takes to build an ice-cream parlor from the ground up.

Scenario / World:

The game scenario is set in an ice-cream parlor, side street stall.

Mode:

Single Player

Objectives:

Build up an ice-cream parlour from the ground up, thereby avoiding the dreaded boardroom.

Characters:

The main viewable characters in the game are the various customers.

Audio / visual aesthetics:

Graphics are very simple, containing shadow to display detail.

The background music and sounds are easy going tempo to hear. Makes the player want to bop to the music :) There is no option to turn it off or on at will. However, this is something I personally think all games should include.

Genre(s):

time management, tycoon

Possible Target Audience:

Everyone

Itemization of game elements:

Game instructions are displayed on first screen, with a play button on the lower right corner.

When the game starts, the top GUI displays the goal in monetary terms that you need to reach for that particular day. It also shows how much you've already earned and how much time you have left for that specific day.

Each day lasts 4 minutes in real time.

The bottom half of the game displays the ingredients and the trash bin on the left side.

Itemization of game rules:

Game is played with simple mouse clicks and drags.

  • Mouse click on the ingredients to make the ice cream that has been ordered.
  • Drag the ice cream to the customer who ordered it, before time runs out.
  • Click on the money to collect the payment.
  • If you make a mistake, you can restart the order by putting the first one in the trash, ie click on the trash bin.
  • Earn at least $50 to complete each task.
  • Fulfilling larger orders will earn you more money.
