Summary: Place a favicon in the title bar of most browsers by making a small image that will show up when your site is viewed or when your page has been bookmarked. Favicons add style to your site and is a very good tool.

What is a Favicon ?
In Internet Explorer 5.0 and above, you can customize the Icon next to your bookmarked web site to be your own customized logo.

When people look at their bookmarks (favorites list) they will be drawn to your web page because of the beautiful logo next to your bookmark.

The favicon is also the little logo in the address bar next to your url where you normally see the Microsoft logo. When you have a favicon installed, your visitors will see your favicon icon.

It's a great way to help your site stand out amongst many bookmarks.

If you bookmark Hypergurl you will notice the favicon looks like this

How do you make your own favicon ?

To make your own favicon, first make a graphic 16x16 pixels in no more than 16 colors. Save it as a bmp.

You will then need a graphics program which can change a bmp into an icon. I recommend Irfanview.

Click here to download the current version of IrfanView

It should only take a couple of minutes to download!
Use this program to change your bmp image into an icon. Name it favicon.ico then upload it to your server.

You then need to add the following code to the <head> tag of your html :

<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON" href="http://www.yoursite.com/favicon.ico">
