How to make Embossed Buttons



Create cool embossed buttons for your website with our easy to follow PSP button tutorial.

This tutorial is graphic intense so we have split it into 2 parts to facilitate page loading times. Please follow the link after step 10 to complete the tutorial.

Step 1
Open a new image.
150x150 pixels
16 Million colors
White Background

Set your foreground color to any color you wish.
For this Tutorial we will use Dark Blue #000080

Set background color to black

Step 2


Draw a rounded selection. of any size.

Selection Type = Circle
Feather = 0
Antialias = checked


Step 3


Fill the the area of the circle with your foreground color.

Fill Style = Solid Color Match Mode = None
Tolerance = 100
Opacity = 100
Sample Merge = NOT checked

Step 4

Save the current selection to Alpha Channel
Selections>Save to Alpha Channel>OK
When prompted, name your selection Outer

Step 5



Contract your selection by 5
Selections>Modify>Contract

Pixels = 5

Step 6
Save the current selection to Alpha Channel
Selections>Save to Alpha Channel
Name this second selection Inner

Step 7



Add a new Layer
Layers>New Raster Layer>OK




Set the Color Palette Foreground color to White.
Flood Fill the current selection.

 

Step 8

Deselect the inner selection by pressing [CTRL+D]

Click on the Selection Tool and draw an off center, semi-ellipse selection.
Selection type = Ellipse
Feather = 0
Antialias = checked


Step 9
When done, press the Delete key. You should now have an image similar to this. The white section is where the "light source" will come from in the 3D effect.


Step10



Load the
Outer selection (Selections>Load from Alpha Channel)

Apply the Gaussian Blur filter.
(Image>Blur>Gaussian Blur) Radius = 3
