JavaScript: The Definitive Guide
Publisher:
John Wiley & Sons, ISBN: 0596000480

Reading this book will help you to understand what javascript is and how to use it.

This book covers a massive range of material in the Javascript language using realistic examples and clear explanations. It can be used both as a learning tool and an important resource which I refer back to often for my Javascript needs.

Definitely a true treasure amongst a sea of programming books!

JavaScript & DHTML Cookbook
Publisher:
O'Reilly & Associates, ISBN: 0596004672

The JavaScript & DHTML Cookbook is all about adding value to the content of a web page. The book focuses on practical and sensible applications of scripting. For every problem Goodman addresses, there's a solution or "recipe" - a focused piece of code that web developers can insert directly into their applications. Yet, rather than just cut-and-paste code, you also get explanations of how and why the code works, so you can learn to adapt the problem-solving techniques to your designs.

I highly recommend this book for both JavaScript/DHTML beginners and pros. The beginners will learn how to effectively use the languages, and the pros will pick up a few tricks that they didn't know before.

JavaScript: A Beginner's Guide
Publisher:
McGraw-Hill Osborne Media, ISBN: 0072131403

This hands-on, step-by-step tutorial is ideal for new programmers and those new to JavaScript. If you want to learn JavaScript but you don't have a solid programming background, then I highly recommend this book.

Pollock has done a great job of taking JavaScript and breaking it down into its essential elements then focusing on one element at a time. He begins with elementary information such as how to place JavaScript into a web page then moves into the basics of programming such as defining and calling variables, functions, operators, conditional statements, etc. Once he has introduced these topics, he moves into more complex material that teaches you how to manipulate them.
