How to use Photoshop curves tool

Photoshop Curves tutorial for beginners

Yesterday I made a blog post explaining how to use Photoshop layers. Today I'll be demonstrating how to use another incredible tool ie Photoshop curves tool.

The curves tool is particularly useful for photographers. If your like most people, at one time or another you've opened up the curve tool, played around with it a little and quickly closed it down. At first glance it can seem very intimidating. However, by spending a few minutes looking over a couple of tutorials, you'll soon realise the power of this tool in transforming images into remarkable photographs.

To follow the tutorials you will need one image opened in Photoshop.
Next click on Image / Adjustments / Curves.

1. Demonstrated below is a great tutorial that will teach you the basics of Photoshop curves within a few short minutes. I've found it a good starting point for beginners. It takes a photograph of a scenery, similar to those that most people have in their collection (clouds and horizon) and improves the color and contrast. In other words, it shows you how to turn dull clouds into a sky that really stands out.

The graphic software used in this tutorial is: Adobe Photoshop.

To start the tutorial press the go arrow.

2. The second tutorial shown below demonstrates "adjusting curves" for beginners to Adobe Photoshop. It is similar to the lesson above, however instead of a scenery, it uses a womans face to show you how to implement the curve tool. By the end of the tutorial you will clearly see a significant change to the highlights of the womans skin and hair tone.
